TORTURE SQUAD - Death and chaos from the jungle

Some of you may not know it. But this Brazilian crew spreads the virus of deadly thrash metal since 1990. For almost 20 years they’ve been true to their roots while creating another chapters in the history of sonic destruction and now finally seems that they’re paid back for their passion and perseverance. Things got definitely better after they’ve won Metal Battle at Wacken in 2007. Their latest effort “Hellbound” definitely marked the new beginning for the band. Quality of TS music connected with the fact that it’s one of the most dedicated bands on extreme metal scene forced us to get in touch with Castor – TS bass player – who found some time between intense touring to answer our questions. If you want to why caipirinha isn’t Castor’s favorite drink and who’s his favorite Brazilian football player please read that article and things will become much more clearer.

IN FLAMES, CARNAL - The Swedish deluge

IN FLAMES, undoubtedly, have played a vital role in the history of metal. These guys hailing from Gothenburg are considered to be the pioneers of melodic death metal – the genre which have as many fans as opponents among metalheads. Despite the growing popularity of this kind of playing and the whole range of the cheap imitators of the Gothenburg sound being, unfortunately, a plague in the metal scene these days, IN FLAMES still play music which is quite unique, fresh and outstanding. What is more, the Swedes usually give really good and powerful concerts so the one they were to play in Poland attracted attention of many fans and was sell-out a week before. This fact was easily noticeable in the club, where the sweat was literally pouring from the ceiling because of the stuffiness and the lack of space.

After eight long years of silence American veterans of metalcore return under CENTURY MEDIA flag with the new album simply called “To The Death”. Band’s guitarist Scott Crouse told us almost all about: band’s reunion, finding a perfect home at the metal label and staying loyal to the same ideals after so many years.

CRIMFALL - As The Path Unfolds

I wonder how many Finnish bands starting their musical career deal with playing stuff of pleasant and catchy character. Some time ago I received the first full-length from Crimfall and it just reassured me that musicians originating from the land of the thousand lakes simply have charming melodies in their blood. The concoction prepared by this band based in the Finnish province of Uusimaa offers a rich pattern of various musical flavours, which many connoisseurs of eclectic sounds might find utterly captivating.

PHIL RIND - SACRED REICH

Damn me, I'm getting old. That's right 'cause I dont't remember who used to say that you shouldn't talk or write about music masterpieces, yo should listen to them. But one thing is sure: whoever it was, he/she was right. Phil Rind - a leader of Arizona based thrash metal legends SACRED REICH. Seems to follow that rule. So his description of 10 all time favorite albums probably is the shortest in whole history of Metal Portal. But I guess that he's done a part of this homework in unforgettable „31 Flavors”. So let's check what has changed after almost 20 years...

AMON AMARTH, OBITUARY, LEGION OF THE DAMNED, KEEP OF KALESSIN - Full Of Hate Festival

This name sounds even today very known and proud… Yeah, the idea of reactivation the festival, uniting yet 15 years ago with the help of famous (and today unfortunately dead) Metallysee Agency the bands conquering effectively the European countries is back and can to see, that the work of Austrians from Rock The Nation is more and more appreciated by the maniacs of metal all over the Europe. As we have regular so called Metalfest at winter days, now it’s the time for something others and this time Full Of Hate Festival is reborn again – the spring tour with the line-up not worse than the hordes playing in December. Additionally, taking into consideration the circumstances and realities shaping the European outlet, can just to admit, that the commercial success of this undertaking was guaranteed already by the start of that: AMON AMARTH, OBITUARY, LEGION OF THE DAMNED, KEEP OF KALESSIN – all of those bands, having a solid support among the European maniacs could only to make the venues full of people. In the capital situated between of Spree and Havel rivers, the admirers of hordes mentioned above honoured with their presence the hall of Postbahnhof in the number about 1000 persons.

HELLSAW - Satan is inside of us

At the end of March Austrian black metallers HELLSAW released their third full length effort “Cold”. Its refreshing simplicity combined with brutal riffs, rapid rhythms and straightforward Satanic attitude should immediately draw attention of black metal freaks. The following interview with band's vocalist Aries might help them understand the nature of HELLSAW's dark and violent art.

DUFF MC KAGAN'S LOADED - Sick

As a long time old GUNS'N'ROSES and VELVET REVOLVER fan I had no other choice. And it would be a lie if I tell you that you have a chance to read this review here only because my boss forced me to write it. In fact I was really curious how recently resurrected Duff's band sounds like. For those who may not know: LOADED was formed in late 90s and after releasing two albums - including one live recording – after went on hiatus in 2002.

LACUNA COIL - Shallow Life

First of all I must admit that I've never followed too carefully the career of those Italian stars of female-fronted pop-metal. In fact after their debut EP caught my attention back in 1998 my contact with LACUNA COIL was really accidental. Of course I'm aware that in the meantime Milan based band became really huge name on rock/metal scene. Especially in US where the success of their previous work "Karmacode" - they've even reached #28 on The Billboard Top 200 - opened the way to record their next effort in sunny LA.

SACRED REICH - Follow the American Way

If we'll live to see the day when something like Thrash Metal Hall of Fame is created, without any doubts it'll be necessary to invite SACRED REICH to be a part of this enterprise. Those Arizona headbangers simply deserve it. It's enough to mention the legendary „American Way” album to shut the mouths of all those whowould try to oppose it. Now the new generations of metal maniacs have a chance to bow their heads before the majesty of immortal anthems like „Who's To Blame” or „Love/Hate”. The re-issue of that classis was a great opportunity to ask Mr. Phil Rind about band's past, present and future.

WARDRUNA - Guardian of secrets

WARDRUNA is a folk/ ambient musical project founded a few years ago by former GORGOROTH drummer Kvitrafn (real name: Einar Selvik). So far only one album has been produced under the name of WARDRUNA. I mean “Runaljod - Gap Var Ginnunga”- the first part of a trilogy that will interpret the runes of the Elder Futhark. A few days ago I had an honor to conduct an interview with Kvitrafn himself. It turned out to be a great opportunity to visit his dark, gloomy world of sounds & silence and fathom the mystery of this unique creation.

Hailed from Sweden, death metal band CLOSER has a potential to become another rising star of Scandinavian metal scene in a very short amount of time. Released a few months ago throught Pulverised Records band's debut album contains a delicious coctail of heaviness and groove with some Swedish melodic death metal ingredients. A few days ago CLOSER vocalist and guitarist Per Bergquist met up with Metal Portal to discuss „A Darker Kind Of Salvation” and some other aspects of band's activity.

RAZOR OF OCCAM - Conflict between science and religion

After over ten years of spreading metal disease in the underground Australia's RAZOR OF OCCAM (currently based in the UK) finally released their long awaited full length album. It's called “Homage To Martyrs” and contains eight songs of ferocious black thrash death metal attack. I don't have any doubts about the fact that's one of the strongest records in Metal Blade's catalogue for 2009. A few days after its worldwide premiere I talked to band's vocalist and guitarist Matt.

SOULFLY - Arise again

Max Cavalera and his fellows are definitely on the right way. SOULFLY’s last album “Conquer” continues victorious march which has began four years ago with “Dark Ages” and was prolonged last year with CAVALERA CONSPIRACY’s incredible debut album “Inflikted” – the march towards their thrashin’ roots. Once again the spirit of the group leader’s past let us enjoy the highest quality of primal, raw and powerful metal. So there was no other way. We were really determined to make this interview. We had a chance to talk to Marc Rizzo -– one of the most hyperactive stage animals on the metal scene and one of the most talented young guitar players – few hours before SOULFLY’s gig at this years METALMANIA FEST in Warsaw. And although he seemed not to be quite awaken – that damn coffee machine refused to cooperate – and in a result he wasn’t too talkative, I guess that this conversation at least shows clearly that things may only get better for SOULFLY. The band seems to be really unstoppable now, Those guys simply know what they’re looking for. And there are more good news for those who look forward to even more heavy and more brutal band’s incarnation. So let’s join Marc in his trip to conquer the metal scene.

CARMELO ORLANDO - NOVEMBRE

Carmelo Orlando is a guitarist, vocalist and keyboardist (occasionally) in one of the greatest Italian doom metal bands NOVEMBRE. The band is currently working hard on the follow-up to fantastic "The Blue" from 2007 but fortunately Carmelo found some time to talk to Metal Portal about his favorite classics. Well, the older of Orlando brothers seems to be extremely open minded person. His musical taste is rather wide, ranging from pop from the 80's to extreme grindcore...

LACUNA COIL - It's friendship not a business

With their previous album „Karmacode” this Milan based female-fronted act joined the company of another top-selling rock-goth-metal bands. First official DVD „Visual Karma – Body, Mind and Soul” has strenghten LACUNA COIL’s position as one of the hottest names on today’s scene. So it’s quite obvious that the expectations connected with „Shallow Life” are really high. I’m definitely not a prophet but something tells me that quality of new, melodic songs – together with undisputtable Cristina’s charm – will let those really nice guys reach another level in their astonishing career. So if you want to know how the gold – or even maybe platinum – was made please follow this conversation. Our guest today is Cristino Migliore, LACUNA COIL’s guitarist.

PESTILENCE - Resurrection Macabre

The wasteful son is back, welcome him with embracing and loving arms! Some time ago one of the most significant metal guitarist of 80/90, Mr. Patrick Mameli decided to re-form his legendary band PESTILENCE. A bit earlier we had an opportunity to listen to Patrick's supergroup's (C-187) debut album. „Collision” turned out to be the strongest debut release of 2007 in many annual polls. Seemed like after many years of separation with heavy music Mameli didn't forget how to make a world-class metal album. Two years later oficially re-formed PESTILENCE featuring Patric Mameli on guitars, vocals, Patrick Uterwijk on guitars, Tony Choy (ATHEIST, CYNIC, C-187) on bass and Peter Wildoer (DARKANE, ARCH ENEMY and many others) on drums recorded band's long-awaited fifth full lenght album. Ladies and gentlemen- most crushing and devastating record of 2009 came into being. Here comes „Resurrection Macabre”!

EXODUS - Fuck everybody if you don't wanna hear it

Mixed reactions to the latest effort of the California thrash metal veterans are quite natural. It’s pretty obvious that they could have expected it, ‘cause there are many orthodox metalheads who see re-recording of classic albums as a white day robbery and desecration of true metal cult. But EXODUS’ vocalist Rob Dukes seem not to care about it at all. He’s got very simply advice to all the nay-sayers: fuck off everybody. This self-confident man told us about it few hours before band’s appearance on this year’s METALMANIA FEST in Warsaw.

PSYOPUS - Shitting on people

This is without a doubt one of the craziest and most fucked up bands on the planet Earth. Since 2003 they've been torturing ears with ultra- extreme, technical death grind stuff, full of weird scales and incomprehensible algorithms. So far these sonic killers have released three albums: "Ideas of Reference", "Our Puzzling Encounters Considered" and „Odd Senses”- the newest (and definitely the sickest) PSYOPUS offering, unleashed just a few weeks ago. Guitarist Chris Arp answered some serious questions concerning the album.
