We are almost like ordinary metal fans

In spite of destroying strength of their music, the concert activity of VOMITORY stays last time a little bit passive. The latest album “Terrorize, Brutalize, Sodomize”, although presents itself traditionally as a piece of Swedish steel with the certificate of highest quality, wasn’t promoted so good as like should to be, very difficult to say about the supporting this stuff by the intensive touring. Life is hard for everyone, so nothing strange, that for the VOMITORY guys too. About that, how this band must to wrestle with adversity and a few other of curiosities, told me very well by the occasion of visit in Berlin his drummer, Tobias Gustafsson, although his war comrades, sitting down close by the table, were breaking sometimes our conversation too.

-You were playing the show with THE ROTTED now. Could you to tell something about it – was it only a single gig, or maybe are you making a tour, being a part of promotional campaign of Metal Blade regards of “Terrorize, Brutalize, Sodomize”? How looks like it, can you explain it?
Actually, we were supposed to do for European tour for three and half weeks together with American INCANTATION, but INCANTATION had to cancelled because of some serious family issues, so these four shows that we are playing now, three shows in Germany and one in Holland there were supposed to be like tour. The promoters of these shows still wanted VOMITORY to play anyway, so this way we done these four shows…

-As I remember, last year you were announced as a participant of Maryland Deathfest in United States. Have you reached it finally? As I know, it was your first gig in this country since the beginning of your career, so which were the reactions of American people? Are you satisfied of this voyage?
Yes, it was very first show in US after many, many years. Anyway, it was a great experience as far as the audience goals, the crowd was really, really good, we had a great response. The arrangement around of festival was not so good, so we were like kind of disappointed in that way, but still overall it was a good experience, you know, to cross the magical line for Swedish band to finally go to US and play there a one show. It hasn’t opened any of doors for tours so far, but at least we have played there once and we talked with a lot of people after the show, they were great to finally come over and really enjoyed the show, so it was really great.

-What do you think about VOMITORY shows? Are you playing enough or maybe not so much gigs and would be better to change this situation?
We definitely want to play more, we don’t play enough, we are playing too little, I think… Regards of touring for our last album “Terrorize, Brutalize, Sodomize”, that came out last year, we hadn’t toured anything. Last year we did a few festivals during the summer, we were as I just mentioned in USA, we did one festival in Sweden and a couple of festivals in Germany, but that was pretty much it, we were supposed to do some touring but that never happened, there were some others things like I became first time father in October last year, so we couldn’t to do anything during the fall. I think, we really want to play more and we are working on getting there, that was we have really enjoyed do it. You know, we really loves to be on tour, to meet new people, play to death metal maniacs, we like it that way, so want definitely to play more. We will try to change it by the next album, which will be released next year.

-I wish it to you from whole of my heart. Especially, you didn’t change your playing style since the times of your debut album. How estimates you the reactions of fans for “Terrorize, Brutalize, Sodomize”? Have you noticed something special?
Well, I think if you compare it with our very first album, nothing our style has involved. We have found our own style, we did that around the “Revelation Nausea” album, that’s signature VOMITORY style, I think. But we are still the same band, the same kind of band, we sing the same way, when we write the music and the reactions of the fans for the new album were really, really good, it was amazing. And the media as well, you know, we were overwhelm, especially the production was something, the people have talked really good about, the production of last album is really, really crushing. Also the artwork is another thing, that people talked a lot about, cause it’s really gore, realistic and disgusting all of that. It took quite a long time before that, a previous album “Primal Massacre” we released this album in 2004, so it was three years before “Terrorize…”, so personal I was a little bit afraid, that our fans maybe won’t like our new album. I was proved very wrong, cause everything was really appreciating it, as far as I know we had a very positive reactions of which we were of course very happy, cause “Terrorize, Brutalize, Sodomize” is probably the strongest of VOMITORY albums today in many ways – not just only the songs, but in our personal performances as decisions, the artwork, the production and all those things. All those things combined together creates solid album ,very rock solid album… I’ll close the door (the noise from the outside of backstage was preventing to us reasons of still opening door, so Tobias stand up and closed it – N. K ) … I think, that the artwork for example is very important, that everything fits together to make a one strong unit and that’s we have succeed it on “Terrorize…” for 100%, I think it’s really, really good. On previous albums, well, some of the artworks have been good, some of them have not been so good, but on “Terrorize…” it fits the content of the music, the lyrical content – it’s one solid piece of death metal, I am really proud of it.

-Who is responsible for writing the music in VOMITORY (Peter in this moment waved by his hand – N. K) – you, your brother, you both maybe? Anyway, how many times need you for creating the stuff of every album?
I write most of the music in the band… Ah, sure! (the joking intercalation of Urban and laugh the all of us) …on the last album I got some help from Peter, Peter did three of songs on the new album, I made the rest the remaining parts and Eric writes always most of the lyrics. On the last album I wrote a one lyric, Peter did a couple of lyrics too, so that’s the way it looks. So, I am the main composer. We usually need a some kind of pressure on ourselves to be able to write in a good base to have everything finish the new album, cause if we don’t have a date, let say to record new album in winter, you know, we need to say to ourselves, so we are going to record it then and then to have something to work against. Now we have started to write the stuff for our next album and I think that we will take about year something to all finish, music and lyrics all of songs. That was in case of “Terrorize…”, it took us one year to write. You know, we are not a full-time musicians, we have all the full-time jobs, we are almost like ordinary metal fans. We have a full-time jobs, we have the families now, so we can’t to sit down and write the music all days, so it consumes a lot of time, it’s difficult to find this time, but we make it somehow, and so far for the next album we have 5-6 songs, maybe 7… I think, that 6 songs finished, so we should start to record it in January.
