RAZOR OF OCCAM

Conflict between science and religion

2009-03-26 09:49, Darek Kempny

-Another interesting thing I'd like to ask is your band's name. To the best of my knowledge RAZOR OF OCCAM comes from a principle attributed to the 14th-century English logician and friar William of Ockham. It states that the explanation of any phenomenon should make as few assumptions as possible, eliminating those that make no difference in the observable predictions of the explanatory hypothesis or theory. Could you tell me some more about that? How did you choose that name?
As it happens, the blade to which the band moniker symbolises not only the discord between reason and superstition, but also the debt owed religion by science. Like many weapons of logic, the proving ground for Occam’s razor was the often-heated clerical debates over the interpretation of scripture that took place during the middle ages. The protagonist, William amongst them, could not have forseen that the principle behind the razor of occam would one day be used to deny the existence of the god they held so dear. Much as how the church authorities of Renaissance Italy were unable to understand the implications of the burgeoning interest in natural philosophy I find it hard to fathom how Bronze Age mythologies can persist in this modern age of reason.

-What's next for RAZOR OF OCCAM? Are you going to hit the road now in order to promote Satanic music, sexual promiscuity and alcohol addiction?
We are confirmed to play Hell’s Pleasure festival. Hopefully we will get a chance to play more shows soon.

-OK, that's it. Thanx a lot for the interview. Anything else you'd like to add?
Thanks for the interview, Darek. It was very interesting and I only wish I could devote more time to it.
Cheers
