LACUNA COIL
It's friendship not a business

- I’ve heard that this time you’ve spent more time in studio on working on vocal arrangements. How was it with guitars. Did you work longer than in the past?
Well yes for sure. I mean the fact that you’re recording in LA gives you a lot more possibilities. Because with most of endorsement that we have like LINE6 or ESP they’re all based there. And it’s very easy to go music store and get those amps. So we have had a lot of different equipment to play with and to experiment with. And we really have had more time than in the past to work on guitar parts as well.
Don is very talented guy. He plays guitar and bass as well, so whenever we would actually had to find the sound he would helpem us by trying to make the idea that we had in our head to become a reality. That was great. Recording with him in LA was definitely an improvement from the past. How better tha LA ca nit be if you have to record an album. You can find everything that you want there.
- You seem to follow DIY philosophy. But didn't you even think about inviting one of your friends from other band's to join you and help with recordings. Maybe at least you should pay back Dave Mustaine. Don’t you think that he’ll think that you’re a little selfish? ;)
Ha ha… If’d have a chance we’d invite him for sure. I mean he’s a great guy. We toured in Australia. together last year. Whenever he’s in Milan with MEGADETH we all go to see him. First of all because we’re huge MEGADETH fans. I don’t kno maybe in the future something will happen…
- You've reached a huge success in US with Karmacode. Are there any special plans to support "SL" in that country? Btw are you going to reach any new territories – if there are any left - during the upcoming tours?
Actually we are going on US tour with: DISTURBED, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and CHIMAIRA. It’s the MUSIC AS THE WEAPON tour and it’ll last for two months and that will happen across the release of the album which is great and I’m sure that when we’ll be there we’ll do interview like 24 hours a day and visiting radio and TV station and all that stuff. It’s gonna be busy I know that for sure. Absolutely there also some territories that still wait for LACUNA COIL. Just to give you an example we went to Russia for the first time in last december. We’ve never been there before. It was amazing. We only player two show unfortunately. We were in Moscow and St. Petersburg. We have had a thousand people in Moscow which for the band that plays there for a first time is really impressive. And also when you think about places like Japan or Australia we’ve only been there like a few times, not like in Europe or US. There’s a lot more that we can do in those territories. And I hope this time we’ll have a chance to do this.
- With every album you spent more time on touring. Were there any moments that you were close to say "Screw You Guys! I'm coming home"?
Hah hah.. No. I mean with everything that we achieve and built together the touring is a part of our business. Of course it’s tiring. ‘Cause when you know that you’re going to be away from home and from the people you love for two months it’s not that easy. In the end it’s nothing that something that has to be done. Over 10 years we’ve been doing this and finally we see that something is happening. It really keeps you going. When I’ll be old on my couch I’ll tell my grandchldren about my rock star life hah hah.. It’ll be something to remember.
- Today gothic elements in your music are reduced. So that question may be a little too late. But I'd like to ask you if you ever did thought about recording or at least playing some show with symphonic orchestra?
We actually thought about it many times. But the problem is the budget. Playin’ with the orchestra is very expensive. There’s a lot of work behind it too. I mean rearrange the songs like for example METALLICA did for their symphonic experiment is not an easy thing to do. It takes a lot of time and unfortunately we naver had a time. We hope that maybe in the future we’ll have such a chance. It’ll be very interesting for sure.
- When talkin' about different approach to your music you've recorded some acoustic versions of your songs - bonus tracks on "Comalies" - didn't you think about whole acoustic record?
No. Because it would be something that would be too much. If you do like for only few songs then you make it special and it’s interesting. If you do it all time on the whole album you’ll lose that interesting komponent. ‘Cause it’s like: here they go again recording another acoustic fuck hah hah. I think that we’ll do it in the future, but I don’t think that we’ll record a whole album.
- Without any doubts you're the biggest Italian rock band. And the only one which was a part of such a huge tours like: GIGANTOUR, OZZFEST and played at the most famous festival. Do you feel that your fellow countrymen - not only metal fans - are proud of what LC has achieved?
I think today most people are. It’s very hard for Italian rock or metal band to get popular, actually to get somewhere. The fact that we’ve never became popular in Italy before we got succesful in US show very well this point. But today I think that people start to realize that we’re something to be proud of. ‘Cause we suddenly became the only succesful Italian metal or rock band. And I hope that we opened some doors for other Italian bands that would follow us and try to do same thing
-You have one of the most Italian nicknames ever. Why did your friends baptized you with such a name - pizza?
Hah hah… I can only tell you this. It’s not because I like pizza a lot, which I do of course. I mean I love pizza. It’s a long story and it’s related to football. And let’s stay with that hah hah…
