Till Death Do Us Part

In a history of DEICIDE very easy can to specify three chapters. The first of them, the most praiseworthy, when the Americans admired the world by the classics like “Deicide”, “Legion”, “Once Upon The Cross” or “Serpents Of The Light”. The second, standing under the sign of albums like “Insineratehymn” or “In Torment In Hell”, which – admitting softly – hadn’t thrown the world to knees. And finally, this third, started by “Scars Of The Crucifix”, after that from band were relegated the Hoffman brothers, admitted as the misers and untalented persons. Recorded with Ralph Santolla and Jack Owen in line-up the next album “The Stench Of Redemption”, as we know absolutely didn’t rapture, although in opinion a lot of critics it was the best album of DEICIDE since many years. Unfortunately, the personal problems of Glen Benton and the next line-up perturbations reasoned a lack of good luck. Coming into being in a horrible mess a new album of Floridian death metal legend “Till Death Do Us Part” wasn’t in this case to entitle the highest top of artistry, about what the drummer Steve Asheim perfectly knows, but doesn’t want to tell.

-Much of people are afraid about, what’s the matter last time in DEICIDE…
Surely that’s not the best time for us, but our new album is exactly releasing and this is the most important in this moment. It’s titled “Till Death Do Us Part” and in our opinion is a very strong shit. What else? For this moment we plays any gigs and thus will be probably to the end of this year. Practically, not only in this moment, cause last half of year we didn’t absolutely…[/b]

-A reason?
We were very busy by a work with new album. First of all, I mean here the personal Glen’s problems, which he must to solve, wanting to sacrifice himself to the band. I don’t want to comment here the details, because so much of stupid rumours circulates on line. Everything presents this way, that Glen must to order his own life and so long, when it won’t happen, DEICIDE won’t be able to work correctly. I hope, that the moment of his comeback to the band soon will come. Maybe not “comeback” in perfectly meaning, cause anyway he left us, but I mean here a full sacrifice and readiness.

-Some wondering is a fact, that Benton had stopped last time to care about his publicity, ascertaining, that actually he is more interested to be a good father for his children than the idol for a satanic world…
These are Glen’s private problems and I will not to comment it. The one is sure – family is one, and band is something another. Two different things, which aren’t interrelated. There’s any word in the statement, that he denies to his opinions or resigns of DEICIDE. I think, that he has traced simply his actual priorities and that’s all. I know him very good and I am sure, that when he will order finally his life, comes to this band back as a man, whom everybody knows.

-So let us hope, that will never repeat a situation, like during the last year European tour, where you have played without your frontman. How do you remember this tour?
Fuck, it was total destruction. Glen’s place was taken by a guy from Polish DISSENTER, who did a good work for us, but naturally wasn’t able to substitute Glen perfectly in every of inches. No way! Nobody would be able to do it. But we are very grateful to him, cause only thank of this a tour could be to realize. Hope, I mustn’t to explain, how could to finish the tour canceling. Our promoters would cast this way a thousands of dollars. We would disappoint the second time our European fans, who probably wouldn’t never forgive it to us. Too much of gigs we have cancelled last time, so this option has in our case any chance of existence more. Incidentally, I am very grateful to the European fans for their understanding. In America it would be completely impossible, people prefers to spread there a fucking rumours about us, having any of correct ideas. Sure, in Europe we must to explain to every of fucking angry people too, why we plays without Glen, but it was to be expected. The tour was organized by a Polish agency Massive Music, so in this place I must to mention about them too. Mariusz is a really great promoter and excellent guy, of course. I know, that he was very afraid about this tour in due of concerts, which were earlier cancelled. I have promised him personally, that we will come to Europe in our full line-up, with Glen on bass and vocal. When was clear, that Glen will not appear, Mariusz was really close to fucking heart attack, but he behaved himself like a true professional, helping us to find way out from this deadlock. I am very grateful to him for this. A self tour I remember quite good, the gigs were successful and a road crew, which has traveled with us – the best, which only can to dream on. Send my greetings to Brovar, Darius and the rest – you rules! I can’t no longer wait, when we will meet again.

-Continuing yet a personal questions, what’s up with Ralph Santolla? Apparently, he left you again after recording…
We declared here very clearly to play any gigs for a some time. In due of those circumstances Ralph immediately has left the band. That’s professional guitar player, playing the gigs is his way of earnings. Besides, he really loves to play live gigs, it makes him a much of fun. So, when actually are any gigs in DEICIDE, that’s why he’s not too. For this moment, he travels throughout the world as a permanent guitarist in OBITUARY and I believe, that’s good for him. When a right moment finally will come, we want to got him again. It should be without any problems, cause we have parted ourselves without bad blood. Of course, when Ralph will be for this moment unavailable for us, we will must to search of somebody new.

-So which kind of contribution had Santolla during the composing “Till Death Do Us Part”?
He did only solos, nothing more. At the moment, when Ralph has played the gigs with OBITUARY, we worked with a new stuff. When he came from tour back, all songs were ready. I have sent him a CD demo with a raw stuff to hear it. I remember, that he has expressed himself very enthusiastic about those tracks and declared, that would like to play on this album. Later, when we were already in studio, I have phoned to him, asking or is his earlier offer still actual. He came and did, what had to do. This is exactly his style of the work. He is not very fond to compose the songs, absolutely doesn’t like to take a part in rehearsals too, he is a typical action guy. He mustn’t to be especially prepared, he’s fucking great guitar player, who perfectly knows what’s up in this music. Simply he comes, doing his work so good as he can to do it. He’s very spontaneous and it’s very nice to look on his sacrifice.

-In a context of your troubles, a title of your new album sounds very interesting. “Till Death Do Us Part”, so really nothing would be able to kill your band?
Well, you can to interpret it exactly this way, but a real meaning, hidden under the title of new album is some another. As you know, for the lyrics in DEICIDE was always responsible Glen. So, he decides always too, how the album will be titled. It’s very natural, that being last time in very serious personal troubles, Glen has put his whole angry and frustrations into the lyrics. This all, what he has written for DEICIDE, was always connected with his life problems. I think, that writing makes his free from all of shit, that is around of him. I attitude it in other way, than the people, listening our records and reading our lyrics. I know a personality of Glen very good, I know something more about him, his life and his problems than a ordinary fan. This knowledge allows me for a some other, for more clearly perspective of seeing a some things. Regards “Till Death Do Us Part”, you will find on this album one from the most hateful lyrics, which were at any time created by his hand. In every respect this stuff is surely something special in our discography, a more realistic than the earlier albums but still very fucking hellish hot. Glen is last time very strong fueled by hatred and this makes, that his new lyrics are exactly as you hear. Angry, nasty, cynic and very, very brutal.
