CYNIC
The unknown source of inspirations
2008-12-26 11:37, Nikolaus Kunz
A music only for open minded people. Only with this words I could to describe a stuff of the band, that after many years of absence returned now to the world of living, of course with the new album. CYNIC, because that’s exactly a band in question, admired all of fans of extreme sounds before 15 years by the album “Focus”, confirming that death metal sounds absolutely mustn’t be boring by their intensively tempos, blasts and typical brutality, but by the using of samples, jazz fusions and a much of other strange elements can to guarantee a very curious and technical vision of metal beyond all times. A coincidence did however, that a path by the band was walking, ended a break-up and a very long silence. Nothing’s however impossible, so even after so many years CYNIC was able to rise from the grave, not only playing the occasional concerts, but even recording a new, the same excellent but surely not easy perceptive through the only one listening album “Traced In Air”. For a few of my questions answered very nice, although a little bit taciturnity leader of group, Paul Masvidal.
-Which kind of mood have you got being with all of us today and playing again like in the old times?
I feel good, everything’s great.
-Your absence since the releasing of “Focus” album in 1993 took almost 15 years. Why must we all to wait so long for your return? Why haven’t you returned for example in 2000, 2005, but exactly in this moment now?
We broke up as a band in 1996. We had no intention to getting back together, so that’s why. We were reunited last year and we decided to make a record after that, but then CYNIC was finished, a finished story in 1996, so that was really why we didn’t make a record until now.
-I have read somewhere the information, as your break-up was reasoned in due of hurricane on Florida shortly after recording “Focus”, when all your instruments in rehearsal room were destroyed. Is it true?
No, the hurricane happened before the “Focus”, it was before we made the album, so… No, we broke up, because we were fed up with the music industry, you know, we were just exhausted and we wanted to break and we wanted to be musicians again without any pressure, without the business in vault, so that’s why we broke up.
-Are you one and only original member from previous and original CYNIC line-up? If not, who are the other people that plays with you today?
No, I am not the only member, Sean is another original member in the band as the drummer – Sean Reinert, and the other two guys: Tymon Kruidenier and Robin Zielhorst – they are my friends that I know for a while and they just play in the band now. The both played on the record and Robin is a part of the touring band.
-What have you done during all those years of your absence? Was you active in a music business all time or maybe in something others?
No, I have been working as a musician, I have been working in a world of film and television as the composer, so it’s been really busy.
-Your new album names “Traced In Air” and was released in this year. Was you conscious the pressure and so enormous kinds of awaiting your fans in due of masterpiece like “Focus” before 15 years?
Was I conscious? Harsh ally I guess, but I wasn’t concerned about it, cause only what I wanted is still making a good record, that was it…
-A music playing by you is a piece of very untypical and intelligent stuff. It’s not so easy to mix metal sounds with progressive and even jazz elements. What inspires you, where your ideas comes from?
I think, that’s universe, you know it’s just… I don’t know where my ideas comes from. They just come, that’s not really I can’t explain where the creativity comes from, it’s just a pure thing, you know…
-So maybe could you to foresee which shape will have a next CYNIC album?
I can’t imagine it yet, I am only thinking about this moment.
-We will have a sad anniversary on days, because the 13th of December will be 7 years as died Chuck Schuldiner, the great composer and musician. How remember you a guy with whom you played on the fourth album of DEATH “Human”?
I remember him as a friend that I knew a long time, so he was just somebody who was in my life, so you know, it’s a very long complex relationship. I remember him very well, that’s pretty much my memory about him.
-Are you playing maybe in the other of bands or side projects? I don’t remember or is it true, but had you maybe a episode in the band called AGHORA?
No, that’s my drummer Sean. Sean played with AGHORA, not me. Anyway, he just played as a session musician to just play drums.
-How spends you your spare time? Only the music is your life or have you got maybe a time to meet your friends somewhere in the bar to drink a beer or do something others?
Oh, sure, I see friends, every should have a normal life outside of music… Yeah.
-Which words would be good to recommend CYNIC to the people who doesn’t know yet your music?
Have a opened mind and the opened heart and a lot of things to be as they are… You know, I can’t really instruct people other than to just be opened, that’s it.
-Your life motto sounds…
I don’t know… Be here now, I will be there... Be here now.
